UCB Theatre to Open East Village Location?, Aziz this wknd

Brooklyn Vegan - 1 hour 2 min ago

Dave Hill, A.C. Newman, Carl Arnheiter & Brett Gelman @ UCBNY (via)
"Exciting news for the East Village -- we've discovered that the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre has designs on the former Two Boots Pioneer Theater space at 155 East 3rd Street. Alex Sidtis, directing manager of the UCB's current location in Chelsea, revealed to [NY Magazine] that the troupe is hoping to open an East Village outpost, depending on whether it can secure a tavern wine license (the theater will plead its case at a January 12 meeting of Community Board 3's licensing committee). The location will mean more stage time for its performers...

Sidtis loves the fact that the 99-seat theater has a lobby, and says of the layout, "It's a little different [than that of the Chelsea location]. The shows will be more presentational and less theatrical in nature." Phil Hartman, who built the theater a decade ago and still owns the adjacent Two Boots pizza parlor and video store, tells us "I love the theater and I'm pleased to think that it would stay alive as a theater and not get gutted and turned into something else."..."
[NY Magazine]The current NYC UCB Theatre is located at 307 W. 26th St. It's there that you can catch Leo Allen's weekly Whiplash show on Monday nights at 11pm...for free. This week (tonight) (11/5), Reggie Watts and Marc Maron will be two of his guests.

Leo Allen's Monday night spot used to be held by Aziz Ansari and the Human Giant crew doing a similar type of comedy show with the same types of guests. Don't miss Aziz when he does a much bigger type of show January 9th and 10th at Comix. All dates HERE.

The above photo was taken at the UCB Theatre in NYC, on December 18th.

Lambchop opened for YLT, playing more 2009 shows (dates)

Brooklyn Vegan - 3 hours 28 min ago

Lambchop w/ James McNew on bass @ Maxwell's - 12/26/08 (Dawn & Stephen)
"Having Lambchop on hand to open [Hanukkah] night 6 [at Maxwell's] was like having a holiday family reunion, minus the drama. There are multiple reasons why we've made record after record in Nashville, and one of them is certainly the chance to eat hot chicken with those guys. Their set was gorgeous, mixing songs from OH (ohio) with a few covers, some more aptly chosen (Bob Dylan's "You're a Big Girl Now") than others (Kurt's What State Is Hoboken In topical shoutout to Caroline with the Wedding Present's "Kennedy"). Were it not for the music stand in front of him, you would never have guessed that James was a fill-in on bass."
[Yo La Tengo]Lambchop is headlining Bowery Ballroom in NYC on February 12th. Tickets go on sale Wednesday. All tour dates below...

The Thermals - 2009 Tour Dates (Brooklyn, Europe, SXSW)

Brooklyn Vegan - 3 hours 58 min ago

"...So much else is new and wonderful for us! We have a new record label, Kill Rock Stars. Not only has Kill Rock Stars released some of Portland's (and the Northwest's) best punk and indie records to date (Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, The Gossip), but the label has recently relocated to Portland, and is quickly filling it's roster with even more great Portland bands (Shaky Hands, Panther, Horse Feathers). The Thermals are thrilled to now be a part of this family as well. We were thrilled to be part of the Sub Pop family for six years, but we felt it was time to move on. We turned down a second contract from Sub Pop, lest you think we were dropped! You don't drop us, we drop you. Not you, personally. We love you! Seriously, you're the best.

We have a new drummer as well. Westin Glass, formerly of Seattle's Say Hi, joins us (Kathy Foster and Hutch Harris) to complete the third (or so) live line-up of The Thermals. In addition to (again!) touring the UK with The Cribs this February, and playing multiple shows at SXSW in March, we will be touring the U.S. for two months, following the release of Now We Can See on April 7th. We'll be doing festivals in Europe and the U.S. all summer long, followed by a full European tour in the fall... - The ThermalsThe Thermals are also playing a late show (11PM doors) at The Bell House in Brooklyn on January 31st before they go to Europe. $12 tickets go on sale this Tuesday at 3PM.

Speaking ot the Bell House, tickets are also still on sale for the Great Lake Swimmers show happening there on January 9th, plus The Mugs are playing there on January 17th and The Forms are playing there on January 18th.

All Thermals dates below...

VH1 Show Premiere : Rock Of Love (III) Bus

MOKB - 4 hours 58 min ago

The other way I wasted my time last night...

I have seen some train wrecks in my day, but nothing prepared me (not even the first two seasons!) for the amount of crazy that showed up for Rock Of Love Bus (season three) last night. Small photo recap here.

Porn stars, strippers, Penthouse pets, fighting Brazillians and a plentitude of silicone-injected groupie/white trash turned out to battle for former Poison frontman Bret Michael's annual ego-building/temporary affection contest.

Bret is on tour this season, so the ladies have been divided into two groups on two buses and will be following him around from tour stop to tour stop. The rest of the show remains the same as the previous two seasons...challenges, dates, yadda yadda yadda. The Blue Bus contains the tamer, "more stable" sect of women, while the Pink Bus holds the tornado of crazy now known as "The Blonde-tourage".

Episode One, which starts off in my hometown of Louisville, Kentucky(!), contains your standard drunkeness, low self-esteem, crying, excessive drinking, making-running, alcohol throwing chaos we've come to expect from the early season ROL episodes, however this season we're treated, right from the get-go, to a girl fight for the ages. I mean this season has gone from 0 to 60 in record time. Barfy Brazillian Marcia had reached her breaking point with with Scary Tatooed Barbie Ashely. After a previous drink-pouring incident, the two later erupted into all-out choking, hair-pulling fury in their hotel room. It was a thing of beauty.

Here is the first altercation that set things in motion...

Cartoonish is an understatement this year. Trashy Jessica Rabbits are plentiful this year. Check out photos of all the girls here and here and here's the basics breakdown:

Maria - Odds-on favorite to win...former model
Marcia - Throws up and then makes out with Bret...pours drinks on other girls...chokes a bitch out. Badass.
DJ Tranny Pack (aka Nikki aka DJ Lady Tribe) - "I'm a very spiritual person. I'm deep as well." Maybe the scariest chick I've seen since Angelique last season. This train wreck gets kicked off and won't leave set...has to be carried out. Would've liked to see her stay for another episode just for the cringes. Also rapped for Bret with lyrics written on the back of a piece of paper with instructions for treating Genital Herpes.
Jasmineva - Desperate porn star...serious crazy waiting to explode. Hilariously Bret has an issue with her past sexual exploits. Come on Bret...pot kettle black.
Constandina - Spiritual guru-full-of-shit weird chick that has done too many drugs
Samantha - Too thin, kinda scary, very desperate...leopard print WT
Beverly - Beefy tomboy...likes to start shit with blondes...throws drinks.
Farrah - Definitely a stripper or a dude...best described as "Brooke Hogan 20 years from now."
Kareena (aka Gina) - Shit-started, kicked off...her drama will be missed.
Kelsey - Tells us that some people rely on brains and others on boobs...she knows boobs are her strong suit.
Taya - Former Penthouse Pet prides herself on being the classy one in the bunch...only willing to show her ass at the photoshoot.
Melissa - Won't last long...already screaming to go home...admittedly uses men to advance in the world.
Natasha - Token african-american girl...absolutely loses her shit over the packing of the tour bus. almost comes to blows with DJ Tranny Pack.
Brittanya - Cheek studs...yikes. Not bad though otherwise.
Stephanie - Sent home...pretty vacant. Too nice for this competition anyway.
Heather - A snoozer...sent home.
Marciela - I don't remember her...sent home.
Megan - I don't remember her
Mindy - I don't remember her

Based on what I've seen, this show has simply degraded into a ratings grabber for VH1 and a media exposure booster for Michaels. No way he "finds love" on Season Three. I'll enjoy the chaos while it lasts though. Episode Two journeys to my current hometown...Indianapolis, Indiana! Yay. How did I miss this?!

Kentucky Sucks...

Andrew Bird - new album stream, in the NY Times, Carnegie Hall instead of Radio City & hype

Brooklyn Vegan - 6 hours 36 min ago

At 35, Bird has spent almost 15 years working relentlessly for the sort of exposure he now seems poised to enjoy. "Six years ago, when I was still struggling, I just wanted to go anywhere in the world and play for 300 people," he says.

And yet when I first met Bird a couple of weeks before the Hideout show, he didn't have the air of an underappreciated artist finally about to be given his due. On the contrary, he seemed worried about losing control over a career that he is accustomed to micromanaging. He wondered, for instance, if "Noble Beast" was perhaps being promoted too aggressively. Bird's publicist had wanted him to play one of the first shows on his coming tour at Radio City Music Hall (capacity: 6,000). Bird was concerned that it was too big a venue, that he might fail to make a connection with the audience and that things could easily spiral downward from there. They compromised on Carnegie Hall, which seats about 3,000.

"A lot of bands get hyped and go from playing for no one to playing for thousands of people, most of whom are standing there with their arms folded saying, 'O.K., are you really as good as everyone says you are?' " Bird told me. "I've never had to deal with that. I've gotten here by winning one person at a time."
[Sunday's NY Times Magazine]Andrew's new album Noble Beast is now streaming at NPR.

remembering Asbestosdeath (video, High on Fire, Om...)

Brooklyn Vegan - 7 hours 12 min ago

by Black Bubblegum

Before High On Fire and Om, there was (and now is) Sleep, but before THAT, there was Asbestosdeath:Asbestosdeath started life as trio consisting of Al Cisneros on bass, Chris Hakius on drums, and Tom Choi on guitar. Matt Pike later joined as a second guitarist. They recorded two 7"s: their first ("Unclean", 1990) was self released (Asbestos Records) and a second 7' ("Dejection," 1990) was released later that year by Profane Existence. Choi left Asbestosdeath to form Noothgrush after the release of the second 7". The band recruited Justin Marler to replace Choi and changed their name to Sleep. - [Wikipedia] High On Fire recently announced that they are working on their new album for their new label, Koch Records. Check out great video of Asbestosdeath live at Gilman in 1990 as well as High On Fire live at Amoeba Records in 2007, below...

VH1 Show Premiere : Confessions Of A Teen Idol

MOKB - 7 hours 38 min ago

Let's take a TV break for few and discuss some of VH1's new show premieres...

I got pretty wrapped up in Confessions Of A Teen Idol last night. For now, this reality show actually seems to have some soul in it. I hated on more than a few of these guys growing up, so before it aired, I thought I might enjoy seeing how their careers have faultered. I actually found myself feeling quite the opposite at times.

The basic premise for those who missed it, "Seven teen idols return from obscurity for their chance to step back into the spotlight." The obvious fact behind the show is that fame is an addiction that drives many young stars onto various paths of self-destruction, and now that these "has beens" have got their lives back in order, what will it take to get them back to stardom. The group will be guided through group therapy sessions administered by psychology-expert-to-the-stars Cooper Lawrence, as well as various meetings with directors, producers and other folks who Scott Baio calls the entertainment industry's "gate keepers", to see if they have what it takes to get back to the good side of the public eye. The show is the brainchild Scott Baio (Chachi) and Jason Hervey (Wayne from The Wonder Years), both teen stars who have found ways to stay relevant in today's entertainment world.

Since this isn't actually a competition for fame, the big question of the show becomes, in this pseudo-quest to recapture their lost fame, what are these guys hoping to actually do on this show? It seems they will be broken down to the point of accepting (or not) their own roles their losses, but beyond this new media exposure, how can/will they actually gain anyting tangible that will put them successfully back in the limelight?

Only Adrian Zmed (T.J. Hooker) seems to currently be working hard (he has a regular show performing on a cruise ship) to stay in front of people that once might have known or cared about him. The others are obviously open to any opportunities that might present themselves, but are they actually willing to work to make new opportunities happen?

Jeremy Jacksons' (Baywatch - The Hoff's son) story is especially interesting/heart-wrenching and you find yourself, at least at this point, rooting for the guy. He seems to have conquered a terrible addiction to meth and has been humbled to the point of willingness to accept his faults and build from square one again.

Some of the other still seem to be wrapped in a world of delusion and coping mechanisms. Eric Neis (the original Real World and MTV's The Grind) is really off his rocker (now making a living as a vegan life coach), but at the same times seems to have good intentions in all he is doing.

With age comes wisdom (and maybe desperation) and Christopher Atkins (The Blue Lagoon) and Adrian Zmed (T.J. Hooker) seem to have enough smarts and public good will out there to find their way back to a good place.

Jamie Walters (Beverly Hills, 90210) and Bill Hufsey (TV's Fame) seem to also be living good, healthy lives, but neither really seems to have much going for them in the "why would I care again" department. Walters' hit song How Do You Talk To An Angel was a terrible TV created phenomenon and I doubt his current music is good enough to attract any new listeners in today's day and age. We'll find out, and regardless, both seem to be good enough guys to at least have you feeling no animosity towards them.

Former Baywatch hunk, David Chokachi was the first to almost lose his shit. After being duped into believing throngs of fans awaited behind a curtain, only to find only the show's Executive Producers standing there once it was opened, Chokachi threatened to walk off the show. Chokachi seems to have enough self-esteem to at least posture that he won't let the show's producers publically humiliate him. Like some of the others, he has retained all his former bo-hunkness, but his acting chops are still in question of course.

We'll see as things unfold if these guys are sincere, mentally healthy and willing to put in some work behind their faded status or simply here to let the world know they still exist.

Scott Baio's Episode Two Preview: "They get to see how a focus group of women react to photos of them when they were famous and now. It's pretty hard-core stuff, and it's not a cruel thing but a real thing. It's very tough to be objective about yourself so this was a chance for them to hear what people really think about them."

TVD Weekly Wax | Adrian Borland

TVD - 10 hours 33 min ago
...aaannd we're back! Happy 2009 everyone!

So, over the hyper-extended break taken here at TVD, there was plenty o' time spent at the neighborhood haunt, the Fox and Hounds. One evening sitting in front of the big window under the neon sign looking out over the patio, my pal John and I got involved in a conversation about graphic design. John's a web design/development instructor at the Corcoran and at Catholic U., and as an Art Director in my 9-5 guise, he had a few questions for me about what I look for in a junior designer's portfolio.

The timing was good for this conversation too as I had hired a very talented junior designer just about a year ago after reviewing literally hundreds of portfolio submissions, at first via an ad posted on craig's list then afterward in person during interviews.

The thing that struck me then that resonated in our conversation was that student and beginning designer's portfolios seem to just lack the basic fundamentals--super solid typography, type and image cohesion, individual flair, and a communications capability. Most seem to be extended classroom exercises at best and very basic stabs at 'just doing it'. Which I understand really...I was there starting from nothing and hoping for the best. Most troubling ultimately though was a basic lack of executing the fundamentals in a professional portfolio...which IS supposed to be your best stuff on display, right?

What seemed to dilute the talent pool we surmised was the computer. We've all got one and with the help of a little design software we're all 'designers' with or without formal instruction or innate talent. Some can get there, some can get close, and it's pretty easy to tell who's got it and who doesn't. The computer seems to say 'yes, you are' as opposed to 'you just haven't earned it yet, baby.'

No surprise then that he topic turned to music and the parallel that can be drawn with the aforementioned. The computer INDEED seems to say 'yes, you are' as opposed to 'you just haven't earned it yet, baby' YET all these young shavers have their on-line MUSIC portfolios on-display, via Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, or any other shortcut subsequently made worse by the plethora of bloggers (ding!) in search of content who, in the end, champion acts that barely merit the title of 'beginner.'

I've seen it over and over again the past year exacerbated by the thin talent base that became the fodder for 'Top Ten Lists' in vogue at the end of December. I hesitate to point fingers or name names cuz we're all sweet this a-way...but catch me at happy hour and you can bet your tits I'll have names and nausea to spare.

So in the coming year, JUST the good shit. Only the acts that somehow have got it (or HAD it) and none of the Gang of Four copyists in reverso skinny jeans and ironic hippy beards peddling half-formed or worse, ill-formed compositions on shiny young auto-tuned kids. Unless they KILL of course. (Our tent is big enough.)

This by the way places a heavy burden on our 'First Date' series which returns full-throttle in '09. Our 'Daily Wax' becomes the 'Weekly Wax' as we veer more toward the artists as opposed to singular releases. FINALLY I plan to get to the hundreds of LP's added to the TVD shelves over the course of '08 that will become our 'From The Vaults' series or something similarly named.

We've got vinyl LP giveaways already lined up and there will be plenty more than last year. We've got ticket giveaways already lined up and there will be plenty more than last year. We're ramping up our overall vinyl news coverage. AND we have our exclusive Record Store Day 2009 news and updates...so, we anticipate a major bit of blogging over the course of the year. Your continued indulgence is warmly appreciated.

...which brings me to the very first artist this year and the individual I listened to above all others last year: Adrian Borland and more specifically his band, The Sound.

I've rambled on a bit for one day, so go forward and download the following five from The Sound's live 2-LP set, "In The Hothouse." Close your eyes and imagine this band taking the stage at oh, The Black Cat or The R&R Hotel with this level of energy and passion and song-craft and ask yourselves why we're settling for...oh, ...wait.

I'll keep it sweet.

The Sound - Under You (Mp3)
The Sound - Hothouse (Mp3)
The Sound - Silent Air (Mp3)
The Sound - Monument (Mp3)
The Sound - The Fire (Mp3)

".....the stifling heat of The Marquee is multiplied a thousand fold by that generated by The Sound on stage " -Mat Smith, MELODY MAKER

"If I've seen a more intense gig this year , I'd appreciate being told." -Chris Roberts, SOUNDS
